today i'm thankful for sublime movie directing. this one is about kindness, on a subliminal level. the mixed density of the story reminds me of {to name a few} david lynch's, paul thomas anderson's or miranda july's approach to life in general, and to certain topics specifically. you need to couple down a few gears and adjust your seatbelt on this one, in order to enjoy the movie ride. of course the long cameo by white haired david byrne does help. his song HOME easily makes up the general gist of this peculiar quest.
there're tears. there're moments of spark. in most unexpected corners and in a jewish kind of way. sean penn crawls into the aging body of a pop star. {now penn would do that, would he not?} i am grateful though for his true and weathered, kind face at the end. i know it's all been about moonrise kingdom of late, but slip this paolo sorrentino movie on your to-watch-list, do. if you already viewed this marveling tragic comedy of intricate innuendoes and brainy social commentaries, then spread the word. tinyWOOLF insists. ♥ jane's corner view, francesca's hosting, kari's theme. thank YOU, kari.
oh yes

ReplyDeleteI have to see it now :) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI saw the preview for this at the Bond film ....which your right he has changed ...alot! Penn that is.
ReplyDeleteBond was fabulous though.....smile!
For some reason I have never heard of this movie either - I usually keep my ears and eyes open for movies that are different from the mainstream - beautifully acted and directed. They are rare and precious. I will have to try and find this one. We have a fabulous DVD store here in Christchurch called Alice in Videoland which specialises in art-house / foreign / Indie films. If it isn't there I won't find it anywhere in this town!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing this trailer, now! It made me chuckle. (I still think Sean has two speeds - this one reminds me of "I Am Sam" combined with aging rock star. But I'm willing to give him another chance ;)
