corner view ≈ hobbies

as a child i played school alot. usually by myself. i drew in many notebooks, was even making some from scraps of paper. i hung out alot in my auntie's parlour, squawking vintage bits and bobs. sometimes she took me into the attic, scratching for more paper bits. those were high days, actually. sometimes i could not sleep from sheer excitement.

i learned knitting from mother, and i learned crochet from others. i was never into sports, having held up with swimming on a regular basis just the once, for a good three months, as my son took lessons.

i've always liked walking. reading has never left me. writing makes me happy. photography is an evolving process from the small childhood throw aways to today's trusted camera.

i'd like to think hobbies change as we progress in life, purely for appetite's sake, but it seems to me the trusted ones resurface gently. the only newish one i might add to an incomplete contemporary list would be yoga. i've been at it for a few months and the calm and concentration flowing from it really helps. like poetry. jane's corner view, francesca's hosting, kristin's theme.

  1. It's good to have hobbies. Mine are usually all art related, but I also love yoga. I used to figure skate for like a million years and that stretchy muscles pleasure is something I love and so yoga really helps with that. But I can't knit to save my life. I tried to...but I'm completely hopeless at it. Crochet is not much better...lol.

  2. i tend to agree with your last statement - all the things that I enjoy doing now were seeds planted a long time ago, that sprouted, and now and then resurface and remind me to water and tend to them ... they'll probably never grow into anything big, but will leaf all around me :)

  3. Sadly, despite my mother being an amazing knitter and can crochet like it was the only thing on the planet to do never really learned. Oh, I could make a scarf, but I am too much a perfectionist and when my rows are not completely the straight I get frustrated. I am also not a big sports person though I did do swim team all through high school, but not because I love sports, but the cute boys on the team. Hee he! :) Today I love to read , behind the stove, or behind my camera!

  4. I love the idea of old interests resurfacing gently. All those special interests in our youth, even if they don't stick with us, were the building blocks of who we are today. To rediscover an old hobby is like finding an old friend.

  7. Lovely words and photos! And, yes, the old, trusted hobbies always come back. As much as I enjoy learning new things, when I want to create peacefully, I always go for my old friend, cross-stitch. It may not be the chic thing these days, but it is like an old friend.

  9. Interesting, Nadine, to think do our youthful interests change dramatically over time or do they deepen and evolve into lifetime pursuits? I think I will muse on this as I draw tonight.

  12. Hi Nadine, I think I was stuck, when I read that you could not sleep for excitement, happens to me now, sometimes I can not sleep by emotion, anxiety ... I do not know.
I want to say thanks for the DC in which you invited me, and I want to wish you, Happy Holidays!

  13. Sometimes, I think, old hobbies shift and change a little. Not the same thing as in the past, maybe, but a similar skill or perspective comes into play. I hadn't really thought about it before--interesting observations!
