belgium is divided, if you want to so call it, in two (three even) language areas. close to holland, we speak flemish, down the south french is the word, on the east side, german would be most popular. {a rather silly data, governmentless as belgium is to this date}
as i live pretty close to the wallonia region, i regularly take the train into such places as ath, tournai, charleroi and mons. on one of such trips, i slid past this unobtrusive place. the walloons may not blink at the name, but i'm wondering what anglophiles think upon riding through this village?
{the fact the railroad sign seems to be upholded by small zip cable wire, sure feels like a silly detail too, don't it?} ☻
I know, there's always a lot of meaning lost in translation - I'm also posting about this!
ReplyDeletegreat! I wish ou a not too silly day!
ReplyDeletesilly zip wires for a silly name, and all done in deepest sincerity I would guess :)
ReplyDeleteFor me, the name Walloons is silly enough. Aren't you tempted to get off the train to see if the town really is silly?
ReplyDeleteFunny :) Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteIt would be fun to live there and tell everyone that life is too short to be serious, so you live in Silly.
ReplyDeleteThe perfect sign for today. Another lost-in-translation moment.
ReplyDeleteI love the sign!! It is perfect for today's theme. xo
ReplyDeleteoh, i would LOVE to go there, to the land of sillies. i think my people must be from there. xoxo
ReplyDeleteLOL... to answer your question. Yes, the red clown nose is on top of Bo's nose. My husband and I tried to put the clown nose actually on his nose, but is nose was too big, so it didn't fit. Plus I wasn't sure even if it did fit that he could breath through it. :) xo
ReplyDeletelove. that. sign. as an american, i can honestly say that if i came across it in your country, it would make my day - but i'm silly that way ;)
ReplyDeletealso love the name, "walloons." very alice in wonderland-y.
really ... a place called silly :)
ReplyDeletefunny I just read in the newspaper this morning about Belgium being without government for a year - that's a looooong time.
Always shake my head when I come across those silly belgian phenomenon of overwriting flemish/walloon/german signage in one of the other languages...in this case it's not necessary, the sign speaks for itself. ;o)
ReplyDeleteThese language conflicts within your country are really hard to understand for a non-belge anyway. I didn't even know there was a third (german) language area, until I moved to Aachen (which might also appear as Aken or Aix-la-Chapelle over there, haha). My father several times lost his way to Liége in pre-navigation-system-times when following the signage to "Lüttich", which then suddenly changed into "Liège" or "Luik". He didn't realise this was all ONE town!
But at least Belgium proves that governments are obviously overrated and does it without as well. ;o))
Now I am going to look up for "Silly" and see if it's near enough to steal the sign! ;oD
A lovely name for a town!! I often feel like I live in 'Silly' right at the moment. Some very strange things going on here!!
ReplyDeleteHa! I love that, towns with intriguing names. (Not far from where I live, there's this place "Doodstil" (dead quiet), and there's one called "Hongerige Wolf" (hungry woolf) as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat catch on the tie-wrap - silly indeed.
PS Yes, our forestcat is a wanderer. But he's been gone a bit too long now, I think. And he is my No. 1 mate, so I do miss him.
Nicki
Too perfect for words!
ReplyDeleteOh, and orange you glad it didn't say "Banana"!
♡
Génial ! Silly like politic is in this country?
ReplyDeleteThis makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteNow slly would be that welsh town name that has like 37 letters and 1 vowel.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to have that sign in my house. There are some day's here that are just too silly for words.
